The Glover Art Studio is open and staffed five evenings a week from 4pm to 8.15pm, enabling pupils to work their art prep or homework and, most importantly for those pupils aiming for high grades, to extend and develop their coursework.
Once a week there is an evening life drawing class from 6pm to 8pm for sixth form pupils. This is an excellent opportunity to improve observational skills, add to coursework and build portfolios for art college applications.
There is a trip once a year for the sixth form to either the London galleries or more local galleries such as the Hepworth Gallery. There is also a Year 10 trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park where they spend the day drawing.
There are plans to run an art trip to New York in 2018. This will be for GCSE and A-level pupils and will provide an opportunity to visit some of the best galleries and architecture in the world.
There is also an artist-led workshop planned for five days during the Autumn Half term 2017 (Tuesday 31 October - Saturday 4 November). Pupils will get the opportunity to work with artist Margaret Uttley on landscape drawings, and then for three days they can produce screen prints from these drawings with Dave Fortune, who is the printmaking technician at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
We have many pupils who continue on to art college courses, ranging from graphics, illustration, architecture, photography, jewellery, fashion, television, to name a few. Often these former pupils return to Giggleswick to give talks about their courses and careers.
