Our Young Enterprise Team have scooped the top prize in the Craven and Harrogate Company of the Year showcase competition and a Best Teamwork award too. Our team of eight budding entrepreneurs took their product, Colour County, to Skipton Building Society Head Office where they displayed their company trade stand. They were also interviewed by a panel of judges from diverse business fields and delivered a presentation on the journey of the company through the year so far. They will now progress to the North Yorkshire County Final in May.
It has been an incredible journey for the students involved in the Young Enterprise Company Programme, which provides young people (aged 15-19 years old) with the opportunity to set up and run their own real company while they are still at school or college. These awards are the result of many months of hard work in creating, marketing and selling their Colour County colouring books. The colouring book stemmed from an idea to create a fun and educational product for children based on Yorkshire landmarks. All the outline images in the book were created by artists from Giggleswick School, and has proven a hit with adults as well as children. Priced at £5, Colour County have sold over 160 books both direct to customers and to local retailers. They have learnt vital business skills through the programme, and have been able to put a lot of classroom learning into practice. Young Enterprise companies operate as fully functional businesses with share capital being raised, weekly board meetings with agenda’s and minutes being written, and accounts being completed on an ongoing basis. Prior to the competition the students also had to complete a near 4000-word company report.
The judges were effusive in their praise of the work achieved by all our students, especially their creativity and attention to detail.
