Talented young athletes from throughout the country battled it out at Giggleswick in the English Schools Fell Running Championships. This was the third time we had hosted the prestigious event which attracted 551 entries from 108 schools.
The layout of the course made a good spectacle for the supporters with some stunning views to be had for those who ventured up onto the open fell. Very heavy overnight rain meant that some sections were very wet and muddy but temperatures were warmer than expected and the runners seemed to enjoy the experience despite the challenging course.
Dan Cook, Director of Sport said “All four races were keenly contested, and the non-selective nature of the event allowed many runners to experience racing on a course with both low and higher fells and including a stream crossing for the first time.”
Giggleswick had a total of 17 runners participating. Highest placed were Jack Hutchinson 19th and Marisa Allen (Captain of Cross Country), both in the Y12-13 race. The best team positions were again the Y12-13 runners where the girls were second and the boys finished 5th. Giggleswick finished 16th in the overall team placings based on the four highest finishing position from the combined races. The overall winner was Dallam School, Milnthorpe and the prizes were presented by former fell and mountain running international and well-known ultra runner, Helene Whitaker.
