Politics trip to Westminster

Our U6 and L6 politicians have just returned from a tour of Westminster, which included a visit to the House of Commons and the House of Lords where they were given some background history regarding the Great Hall and how parliamentary sessions operate.

After a seminar where they looked at voting systems, our students were divided into different political parties and looked at how they would be elected using ‘first-past-the-post’ voting. They learned about what that meant in terms of representation and how that compared with other voting systems such as single transferable vote and regional party list.

They also enjoyed a talk from a representative from Julian Smith’s office who explained the role of the Chief Whip and how she, as a history graduate, managed his diary and her role as a researcher.
