Tom becomes Junior England Fell Running Champion

Congratulations to Tom Humphries (L6) who sealed series victory in the Junior English Fell Running Championships in Derbyshire this weekend.

The six race series attracts the best U19 Fell Runners in the country to compete against each other, with their 4 best results counting for their overall score. Tom went into the final race leading the field and needed to finish higher than the runner in second place to claim the title. After a strong run in very warm conditions Tom finished third, ahead of his nearest rival to claim his well-earned series victory.

Tom said “This is the third time I have completed the series and I’ve had some good positions in previous years but have never finished in the top three. I am absolutely delighted to have finally won it this year.

Last year I moved to Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club, which is a big commute from school but I am grateful to the Giggleswick Elite Sports Programme who pay for my travel to and from the athletics club. The School has also provided a series of strength and conditioning sessions to improve my core work and technique which has been really beneficial.”

Headmaster, Mark Turnbull, said: “I am delighted for Tom. He has worked incredibly hard at his running throughout his time at Giggleswick and this is a thoroughly deserved reward as he approaches his final year.”
