Singer Wil Richmond and saxophonist Maddison Goode were joint overall winners of Giggleswick School’s Young Musician of the Year competition, held on Friday.
Year 9 pupil Emma Belshaw was named the key stage three champion.
A wealth of musical talent from across the age groups was showcased in the annual event, which involves pupils at all levels competing in classes to gain recognition for their hard work and musical prowess.
Head of music, Margie Simper, said: “The whole music department rallied together with extra rehearsals, tissues and hugs and the hours spent organising, programming, rehearsing and performing were unbelievable.
“To stand in front of an audience of peers, watchful parents, grandparents and staff is a nerve wracking experience. The sense of relief after performance was at times palpable; but the personal bravery, pride, integrity and self-discipline on display highlights just how important music and performance are to the development of confident, well rounded young people.”
Old Giggleswickian and professional soprano Sarah Fox, who now sings all over the world, was the adjudicator. She took time to give individual feedback to all pupils offering constructive criticism and positive praise.
Head of instrumental music, Laura Stott, said: “The final class was truly stunning, every pupil performed with confidence, style and a maturity beyond their years. Emma Belshaw played with sensitivity and wonderful dexterity and articulation.
“Wil sang with intense emotion, brilliant intonation, a performance to rival West End productions. Maddison gave a spectacular virtuoso performance displaying fantastic changes of mood and technical brilliance.”
Headmaster, Mark Turnbull, said “Congratulations to Wil, Maddie and Emma as well as all the finalists. Brilliant performances all round to make a hugely enjoyable competition. Our special thanks to Sarah Fox for outstanding adjudication.”
