Computers, extensive data logging equipment and sophisticated equipment are playing an ever-increasing role in teaching and learning within the Department.All pupils in years 7 to 11 take Biology, culminating in entry for either separate Biology GCSE or Additional Science Double Award. Setting in Years 7 to 11 allows differentiated learning and the needs of individual pupils to be met. All teaching will be undertaken by subject specialists in years 9 to 11 and wherever possible in years 7 and 8.
Modular Biology is a popular option at AS/A Level, appealing to a wide range of students. Emphasis at this level is placed on the development of greater self-reliance, in preparation for the transition to higher education. The course provides an excellent foundation for further study, providing the opportunity to gain a sound understanding of biological principles whilst exploring the subject's modern, topical applications.
Visits
L6th Biology Field Trip: In the penultimate week of the Summer Term, this is a three-day course looking at sand dune, woodland and aquatic ecology. It concludes the AS course and equips students with the necessary practical skills and data for A2 coursework. To get hands-on experience of forensic science, students also attend laboratory work shops at the Life Centre, Newcastle.
A range of University visits, lectures and courses are brought to the attention of students, allowing them to choose options which suit their individual requirements.
