Classical Civilisation

Classical Civilisation is a diverse and unique course; it is the only subject that explores History, Literature, Art, Politics, Philosophy, Theology, Mythology, Theatre and Archaeology.
It teaches you about culture and people, what and who influenced them, and Western civilisation evolved. As well as studying interesting material, the course also nurtures cross-curricular skills. Classical Civilisation is a truly multi-disciplinary course which requires literary analysis, historical and archaeological interpretations, ethical and moral debates as well as critical perspectives of the surviving art and architecture.

Classical Civilisation at Giggleswick is available at both AS and A2 level and the modules we offer enable the students to gain an insight into the Classical World. The AS course concentrates on Greek Civilisation, whereas the Romans form the larger part at A2. The course is based on a study of aspects of the Greek and Roman World, from the foundation of democracy in Athens in the 6th Century BC to the fall of the Roman Empire in the 4th Century AD. Key areas of study include Greek Tragedy, Epic Poetry, Greek Art and Architecture and Roman Britain. The main requirement for the course is enthusiasm; there is no language element, as we study all texts in translation.
