Previous ‘A Level’ Design students have gone on to study Design/Engineering at University or Art College, often straight from school and are flourishing. They have joined courses at places such as Glasgow School of Art, Loughborough, Coventry, Central St. Martin's, London College of Fashion and Northumbria, studying Industrial/Product Design, 3 Dimensional Design, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Interior Architectural Design, Transport Design, Computer Aided Design, Graphic Design, Jewelry Design and Fashion Design. For those considering A Level Design: whilst it can be helpful to have undertaken a GCSE in Design, it is not essential. The course is demanding, but within the scope of most Sixth Formers who are prepared to work hard.
The department has three full time teaching staff and a technician. The department comprises of two substantial workshops, three design studios, and a 'hot metals area' for casting, forging and welding. The department has an extensive range of equipment, including a substantial CNC Router and more recently a 3D plotter for rapid prototyping.
There is an annual visit to the Royal College of Art Degree show and the Design Museum in London for A Level students.
