Drama

Drama forms part of the core curriculum for all Senior School pupils, reflecting our commitment to educating the whole person.
The Drama programme allows students to examine a range of social, moral and cultural issues and explore their own responses to them through devised and scripted practical performance.

All pupils in years 7, 8 & 9 are taught Drama for one double lesson per week, and Drama is a GCSE option in Years 10 and 11.. We also teach AS & A2 level Theatre Studies in the Sixth Form.

academic_dramaOur teaching allows every pupil the opportunity to gain the necessary skills to perform in a variety of styles as well as an intrinsic understanding of the dramatic process and the conventions of theatre. We take a practitioner-led approach to learning about drama, so the practices of theorists such as Stanislavski, Berkoff, Brecht, Artaud, Brook and Craig form the framework around which we teach. We also explore world theatrical traditions and conventions from other ages. We love to see the excitement and sense of achievement that comes from having the skills and understanding to fully participate in the dramatic process.

The academic curriculum is supported by an extensive calendar of theatre visits including regular trips to London, Stratford and a range of theatres in Leeds, Manchester and Harrogate The region has a flourishing theatre scene and our students are encouraged to experience a broad range of theatrical forms for personal enrichment and to support their curriculum studies. We seek to ensure our students have access to the most exciting cutting edge theatre taking place in the country. We regularly travel to see work from companies as diverse as Kneehigh, Theatre D’Complicite, DV8, Forced Entertainment and Frantic Assembly. The visits are supported by post show discussions and where possible workshops with cast members.
