In Years 7, 8 and 9, English study covers both the skills needed to produce accurate, expressive and creative writing; and the study of challenging literary text. Oral work is central to the study of English and students are encouraged to develop their own viewpoints and to engage in discussion. In Years 10 and 11, all students take both English and English Literature GCSE. There is a high level of student-based participation in both courses and both carry a significant coursework element.
At AS/A2 level, we offer the AQA B English Literature course, which offers a more open and flexible approach, giving us the scope to study a wide range of text, from Shakespeare to contemporary prize-winning writers. Lessons are informal, in order to promote independent and challenging seminar-style discussion. Again, there is a strong coursework element and students benefit from one-to-one tutorial-type teaching.
