There is also a small compulsory Religious Studies component in Key Stage 4, alongside the opportunity to take Religious Studies GCSE and A-level as an option. At KS3, the RS curriculum has the teaching of Christianity as its foundation, investigating topics such as the Bible story, Jesus in his historical context and the Christian year. Pupils also receive an introduction to each of the main world faiths, with a particular emphasis on Islam, given its relevance to current affairs.
There are also introductions to ethics and philosophy as well as opportunities to explore other issues which surround religious belief (and doubt) in the modern world.
In KS4 Religious Studies is offered as a GCSE option, following the AQA curriculum studying Mark’s Gospel and Ethics. In addition, all pupils attend RS lessons which focus on topical themes and help pupils to think through various issues considering both religious and non-religious viewpoints.
There are two options open to pupils in the Sixth Form. Pupils may choose to take Religious Studies as one of their AS and possibly A2 choices, following the OCR syllabus in religious philosophy and ethics. Those who are interested in the subject but do not wish to achieve the qualifications, may attend the philosophy and ethics study group which forms part of Giggleswick School’s Sixth Form enrichment programme.
