Learning at Giggleswick

We try to encourage every individual pupil to make the most of the learning opportunities available at Giggleswick, to acquire skills and knowledge that will be useful for life as well as providing them with the examination results required for further or higher education.

academic_learningatgigTo achieve this, we employ highly qualified, engaging classroom teachers whose passion for their subject enthuses those they teach.

We encourage all staff to use accelerated learning techniques, which appeal to all kinds of learners and which move away from the traditional methods of “chalk and talk”.  While some pupils find it easy to learn lists of vocabulary or historical facts, others respond more readily to learning techniques which involve sound, vision and physical activity.

We provide increased opportunities for those with particular talents or interests and support those who need extra help. Students who excel at Science take separate GCSEs in Biology, Physics and Chemistry, while others take a Dual Science award. For those students who require learning support, a tailor-made curriculum is put together to give them the best possible chance of GCSE success in a range of subjects, leading on to A level study.

Although the majority of Sixth Form students take four AS levels and three A2 levels, those who wish to are encouraged to take more, either within the regular timetable or as part of the Sixth Form enrichment programme, and those who find the A level curriculum more challenging may be advised to take fewer in order to achieve their target grades.

Visitors to the School comment on the relaxed, yet purposeful atmosphere in the classroom, the obvious enthusiasm of the teachers and the special quality of relationships between staff and students.
