Lord Cavendish of Furness was born and brought up at Holker Hall overlooking Morecambe Bay in Cumbria. The house, which dates back to the sixteenth century, and large estate has continuously been passed by inheritance through the family line with each generation leaving its own impressions. Hugh Cavendish talks about his life at Holker from childhood (‘when I look back I allow myself the indulgence of believing I was not quite as stupid as my schoolmasters held me to be; nor quite as lazy’) to the present day and of course about the garden which he and his wife Grania have lovingly developed over the last forty years. Both house and garden, open to the public for more than half a century, have absorbed much of the Cavendishs’ time and energy and this is the story of their shared journey as described in his book ‘A Time to Plant’ published this year by Frances Lincoln. The book is richly illustrated with Grania’s photographs and tells of their family and the community in which they live and play such a large and responsible part and the wonderful garden that exists today.
