Scholarships
Scholarships and Exhibitions are awarded on the basis of merit and can be worth from 20% - 50% (Scholarships) and 10% - 20% (Exhibitions) of the day or boarding fee. Scholarship awards are not means-tested and are open to internal and external candidates.
Scholarship exams/assessments are taken in the year preceding entry to Year 7 (11+), Year 9 (13+), and Lower Sixth (16+) and are offered in the following categories: Academic, All-Rounder, Music, Sport, plus Art (Year 9 and L6), and Design and Drama (L6).
Quincentenary Awards
Giggleswick School is delighted to announce two Quincentenary awards in addition to the annual scholarship fund, for boarding pupils entering Year 7 in September 2012. These awards have been made possible thanks to the generosity of an Old Giggleswickian who wishes to celebrate the School’s 500 year anniversary, by helping two young people to benefit from seven years of a boarding education starting in September 2012. The awards will be means tested and will be worth up to 75% of the boarding fee. Candidates must merit the award of an Academic scholarship and be aged between 10 and 11 at the time of the scholarship exams in January 2012.
How to apply for a Scholarship
Parents who wish their son/daughter to sit for a Scholarship should complete and return a Registration form, a Scholarship application form and a Registration fee (£150) to the Registrar up to three weeks prior to the relevant assessment date. References will be taken up with the candidate’s current School on receipt of the above forms.
Means-tested Bursaries
Bursaries are intended to broaden access to the School to enable children from diverse backgrounds to benefit from an independent education. Financial assistance in the form of means-tested bursaries can be awarded to:
- Pupils who have been awarded a Scholarship or Exhibition, but who are not able to take up the place without further financial assistance
- Pupils who do not meet the standard for an award of a Scholarship or Exhibition, but who come highly recommended from their prep/primary school, and demonstrate potential and are not able to take up the place without financial assistance
- Families with children currently in the School who experience unexpected financial difficulties as a result of incapacity or loss of employment or other family problems, when the child(ren)’s education would be severely disrupted by a change of school.
In addition, the Headmaster may admit one pupil (day or boarding) of exceptional ability for admission to the School in any year group from Year 6 – 9, who will not be charged any fees, providing that means-testing proves that such financial support is essential.
Currently, 7% of pupils are in receipt of means-tested bursaries with a value equivalent to 3% of the School’s gross fee income (3.6% of overall fee income).
How to apply for a Bursary
If you wish to apply for a means-tested Bursary, please indicate this when submitting a Registration (and Scholarship) application form if relevant. You will be sent a form entitled “Statement of Financial Circumstances”. This will require you to declare your current annual income and assets, and relevant out-goings. No submission will be considered unless accompanied by valid proof of the relevant criteria.
If awarded, a Bursary will continue for every year in which your child remains at the School, but will be subject to an annual review. We may ask you to pay a greater proportion of the fees if you income should rise, but there is no obligation on the School’s part to increase the percentage should your income fall; in the latter situation each particular case will be judged on its merits.
Eligible Level of Income
Parents whose annual household income is less than £25,000 may be offered 75% remission, when the pupil in question is a Scholarship or Exhibition holder, or 50% remission if not. Parents whose annual income exceeds £65,000 will not normally qualify for assistance.
