Our new equestrian team is going from strength to strength at Giggleswick under the expert guidance of Hilary Wakefield, a highly experienced instructor who has recently been appointed as the team trainer.
The equestrian team was created by a group of pupils who were keen to work together to take part in school equestrian events organised by the National Schools Equestrian Association. The team is made up of six girls, all of whom are very competent horse riders and share an ambition to compete as a team in dressage, show-jumping, and cross-country events.
Hilary Wakefield is a renowned instructor who is a Pony Club National Visiting Coach, is on The BHS Register of Instructors, holds her BHS Intermediate Teaching Test and is a List 5 British Dressage Judge. In recent years she has also been delivering Pony Racing Training Days across the country, so her coaching knowledge is very diverse!
The team is managed by Felicity Mundell with help from Sian Driver, both of whom work at Giggleswick Junior School. Felicity said of horse riding at the school:
“Not only is horse riding a great way to increase fitness but it boosts confidence and self-esteem as controlling a horse and looking after the animal is a big responsibility. It takes resilience as it requires a lot of practice and things don’t always go to plan. The team already put in so much hard work, and I am sure there will soon be news of competition wins and lots of opportunities to compete at different equestrian events. ”
For anyone interested in riding, the school also runs weekly horse riding lessons which take place on a Wednesday afternoon at a nearby stables. The lessons are for all levels and have proved so popular there is now a waiting list. Pupils who wish to register their interest should contact the Games department.
Look out for further updates about both horse riding sessions on our Twitter and Facebook pages, and good luck to the equestrian team!
