Last weekend our elite cross country runners travelled to Loughborough to take part in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships for their respective counties - a major event on the British Athletics calendar. This event draws the very best of British cross country runners from Y8 to Seniors with the men's race won by GB Athlete Andy Vernon.
This race is for runners who have qualified for their counties by running in events for their Clubs rather than Schools.
The course at Loughborough over fields was reasonably firm under foot but sticky in places with twists and turns and was gently undulating. With fields of over 200 runners the pace was pretty furious at the front and a big challenge and experience for all runners.
Eve Hutchinson ran for Lancashire in the U17 girl's race through qualification gained earlier in the season when running for her club ‘Hyndburn Athletic’. Eve finished 242nd from 282 - a tough race but great experience for the future.
Euan Brennan (Ilkley Harriers) was representing Yorkshire in the U17 boy's race and still has next year to compete in the age group being at the younger end. His finish, 22nd place in a field of 263, was a fantastic effort and he has put a real marker down for the future.
Tom Humphries (Eden Runners) ran for Cumbria. Tom is 15 and is actually an U17 like Euan but was selected for the U20's race, so ended up running against 19 year olds over an 8km course, a longer distance than he is used to. Tom has made great progress in his running this year and had a great race finishing 127th from a field of 163.
Euan and Tom will be missed this coming Saturday in the Senior Boys Scarrig race. Instead they will come together to run for North Yorkshire Schools U17 team at the English Schools National Championships, held in Norwich - we wish them all the best.
