Giggleswick pupils create some flowerpot magic

Flowerpot Festival 2017 1

Our pupils may be much too young to remember the wonderful tales of Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men but they have come together to bring some plant pot magic to this year’s Flowerpot Festival in Settle with their storybook sculpture.

The sculpture, which will take pride of place in the town centre, brings the pupils’ favourite childhood characters to life in a unique flowerpot creation featuring Winnie the Pooh, The Very Hungry Catterpillar, Alice In Wonderland and Harry Potter.

Children from Year 8 took the lead in the project and flowerpot fever quickly spread across the school with pupils of all ages taking their turn to create the lifesize storybook, including their visiting German exchange students.

Art teacher Mags Rowles said: “It has been a really fun project for the children and they have worked brilliantly as a team to create and decorate the sculpture. They have been learning new techniques in spray painting and using acyrlic paint with a paint brush to produce the finer detail. It was a technical challenge too with hundreds of plant pot parts to be joined together with wire and silicone.”

Throughout July and August Settle comes to life with flowerpot creations across the town, bringing a smile to visitors as they explore the streets on the Flowerpot Trail.

Mags added “We are so pleased to be supporting this brilliant community festival. The children are so excited to see their storybook go on display and I’d encourage everyone to visit Settle and find us along the trail. ”
