Music

Music is central to life at Giggleswick with over 80% of pupils taking instrumental or singing lessons. Many of them leave with Merits and Distinctions and a good number leave with Grade 8 or even a Diploma with 100% pass rate.

Among the many music ensembles on offer, we are particularly proud of the School Concert Band, which undertakes regular overseas tours (most recently to Germany). In addition to the School Orchestra, there are numerous other smaller groups which vary termly in response to pupil demand and can range from acapella pop choirs to jazz and world drumming ensembles.

A dedicated team of highly experienced visiting music teachers deliver individual instrumental and vocal lessons to pupils throughout the school. There are numerous opportunities for pupils to perform, ranging from small informal recitals to high-profile whole school concerts. Our own Young Musician of the Year competition allows all pupils the opportunity to perform in public and to receive detailed feedback from a professional musician.

We currently have a number of Rock Bands who receive expert tuition and perform at our annual Rock Concert, as well as at many other events both in and out of school. We have our own in-house Cubase 9 recording facilities which offers a chance for anyone to develop a working knowledge of music recording and production.

In Chapel, there are regular sung services throughout the week and congregational hymn singing is taken seriously. Most singers are members of the Chapel Choir and our more experienced singers are also invited to sing in our Chamber Choir, Schola Cantorum, which is our showcase touring choir. The choir has earned huge respect in the choral singing worls and Schola has sung all around the UK in college chapels including Pembroke College, Cambridge, St Edmunds Hall College, Oxford and cathedrals such as Manchester, Ripon, Durham, Liverpool Anglican, Gloucester, St Paul's and Westminster Abbey.

There is nothing like the thrill of live music and, with Manchester just over an hour away, venues such as the Bridgewater Hall and MediaCity (home of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) offer irresistible opportunities to see a professional orchestra in action and get a look behind the scenes. We also are a new partner school to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, which will allow us to bring in tutors and students from the world of Jazz and Classical Music for high quality workshops and concerts.

Giggleswick is also exceptional in enjoying strong links between our music and drama departments, with the two coming together every other year to stage a major musical. Recent productions have included Guys and Dolls, Les Miserables and Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.
