Our Prep School production of Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits, staged in the Richard Whiteley Theatre, was a lively and engaging musical that highlighted the strength of drama and performing arts within the school. Filled with humour, energy, and creativity, the performance brought the classic tale of Ali Baba to life in a way that was both entertaining and memorable.

A Fun and Fast-Paced School Musical

Set in the vibrant city of Old Baghdad, the story followed Ali Baba as he discovered the secret Cave of Wonders and became caught up in an exciting adventure. With a missing princess, a magical genie, a stolen royal ruby, and the mischievous Bongo Bandits, the production combined storytelling, music, and comedy to keep the audience engaged throughout.

Written by Craig Hawes, the show featured a lively script, catchy songs, and a range of colourful characters: from an eccentric tap-dancing camel to a cheeky monkey and a scheming Grand Vizier, creating a fun and accessible introduction to musical theatre.

Developing Confidence Through Drama

The production demonstrated how school drama supports pupils in building confidence, communication skills, and creativity from an early age. Performing in a full-scale theatre environment allowed pupils to develop stage presence while working collaboratively as part of a cast.

Standout performances included George in the role of Ali Baba, Lucy as Flossy Baba, and Sebastian as Humphrey the Camel, alongside Mathew as the Genie. Within the Sultan’s household, Ellie brought charm to the role of Princess Satsuma, while Arthur delivered a strong performance as the Grand Vizier. Freddy added energy and humour as Booboo the Monkey.

From lead roles to ensemble performances, every pupil contributed to the success of the show. The confident acting, enthusiastic singing, and energetic choreography reflected the dedication and teamwork involved in bringing the production together.

A Professional Theatre Setting

Staging the production in the Richard Whiteley Theatre provided pupils with the opportunity to perform in a purpose-built space, enhancing the overall quality of the experience. Lighting, staging, and costume design all contributed to a polished and immersive performance, giving pupils valuable exposure to live theatre.

A Celebration of School Drama

Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits was a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and performance. With its engaging storyline, lively music, and confident cast, the production showcased the important role drama plays in school life.

For those exploring opportunities in school drama or looking to understand the benefits of performing arts for children, this production offers a clear example of how pupils can grow in confidence and develop a love for the stage through meaningful, high-quality experiences.
