Sam secured a First in Mechanical Engineering with Management Techniques at the University of Edinburgh, whilst serving as an Army cadetship officer. He subsequently served as an Army Air Corps officer and pilot before moving to teaching at Winchester College in 2008. During 14 years at Winchester, he taught Physics amongst other commitments, including as Head of Sport, Contingent Commander of the CCF, Housemaster and leading numerous international expeditions working with a local charity. He moved to Giggleswick as the Headmaster in January 2022.
