At Giggleswick Prep School we believe that pupils should be given a wide range of opportunities to develop and practice leadership skills in preparation for life beyond school.

There are a number of opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles at the school. Our Pupil Leadership Team will focus on improving the quality of learning and teaching in the classroom, supporting the school’s core aims of participation, respect and ambition, as well as helping us in our ethos of providing a supportive and stimulating independent education that prepares confident young people for the opportunities of adult life.

Pupil Leaders & School Council

Every pupil at the Prep School is entitled to have their voice heard. Each form from Reception - Year 5 will be responsible for electing their representatives, using this channel to raise areas for discussion and for hearing, and abiding by, the outcomes. The whole school elects our Pupil Leaders from candidates in Year 6, who lead our School Council. All candidates are expected to present their manifestos to the school ahead of elections.

The School Council provides a forum where representatives raise, discuss and propose resolutions about issues which are important to the pupils they represent. They are also responsible for leading fundraising and other initiatives, as well as helping to contribute to school development, including reviewing our Code of Conduct. Our School Council representatives are responsible for gathering information from the pupils they represent and for feeding back after meetings.

Pupil Leaders are expected to support staff at Open events, speaking at key school events, supporting any staff recruitment processes, as well as supporting overall school development.

Wellbeing Champions

The opportunity to train and help support supervising staff at break-times is available to all pupils in KS2. Wellbeing Ambassadors will play with pupils who are feeling lonely, look after pupils who are in need of first aid or are upset, and help monitor the relationships of all pupils in the playground; reporting to staff if necessary. They help support vulnerable pupils, including those who are new to the school, taster pupils and younger pupils. Along with the School Council, Wellbeing Ambassadors will be integral to the development of play times and the opportunities available.

The role of our Champions is to:

Promote a healthy lifestyle, wellbeing and resilience
Monitor the playground (for example, the Buddy Bench) and around the school to help support pupils
Help the school promote good behaviour and an anti-bullying culture
Develop wellbeing ideas, activities and projects in school (including leading assemblies and raising awareness of events).
Help others to know about where you can get help and support from
Be a good role model and a good listener
Talk about feelings and emotions

Eco Committee

Our Eco Committee runs as one of our CAS activities each week and is open to any Year 3 - 6 pupil interested in helping to promote environmental issues and supporting sustainability across the school. They will meet weekly to plan future developments and fundraising events linked to their agreed action plan. Our Eco Committee led the drive towards Fairtrade status, promoting and supporting a Fairtrade Breakfast and workshop with other local schools during Fairtrade Fortnight. In 2016 the school achieved both FairAware and FairActive status, and in 2021 and 2022 achieved Bronze and Silver Challenge Awards with the RSPB.
