Sport is another important area of our curriculum, and we dedicate a timetabled slot each day for this. From Year 3 all children participate in team sports, with the boys focusing on rugby, football and cricket in games lessons across the year; and the girls, hockey, netball and rounders. All our children take part in weekly cross country sessions in the autumn and spring terms, and then athletics in the summer.
We use our own sports pitches (Papes) and sports hall, as well as facilities in the wider Giggleswick site, such as the all-weather astro-turf pitches and swimming pool. Adjacent to the school is our Ghyll Field which is not only used for running, but is a fabulous bike track for pupils to explore and be challenged.
All children take part in regular school sport fixtures, and we host many events involving both independent and maintained schools. The school also takes part in sports tours on occasions.
Weekly PE sessions focus on health related exercise, gymnastics, swimming, athletic technique and Outdoor Pursuits such as caving and geo-caching, making use of the extensive grounds. In Y3/4 & 5 children take part in an overnight residential experience, whilst in Y6 we organise a week away from school to focus on water based activities such as kayaking, sailing and gorge walking.
After school activities further support our sports curriculum including badminton, squash, competitive swimming coaching, tennis and golf. We use external qualified coaches in tennis and golf to further pupil’s skills in these areas.
