A level stars are shining at Giggleswick
Thursday 16 Aug 2018
We are celebrating yet another 100% A level pass rate plus an impressive 38% increase in A*A grades, hot on the heels of record results last year.
There have been warnings from experts that the percentage of top grades could drop this year due to A level reforms and the surge of unconditional offers from universities, but our pupils have defied all national predictions and have increased their percentage of A*A grades - up to 36% this year.
Mark Turnbull said: “At a time of such great change in education, we are delighted to be exceeding national expectations with some excellent results again this year. What pleases me most is the diversity of achievements across so many different subject areas.”
We have enjoyed a long tradition of excellence in Performing Arts and this year’s A level results show that drama and music are flourishing here with all students achieving 100% A*-B grades in Theatre Studies and in Music too.
Among concerns that not enough young people are learning foreign languages, it is also good to see that Modern Languages is also thriving at Giggleswick with 100% of students achieving A*-B grades.
Other highlights include our large cohort of Maths students achieving an impressive 90% A*-B grades and our Art students celebrated 88% A*-B grades.
Rather than taking a fourth A level, all of our A level students also take an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), with over 78% achieving A*-B grades this year. An EPQ allows a student to research an area of personal interest away from their studies and is increasingly popular with universities, building important research skills and can carry more UCAS points than an AS level.
More and more students are also choosing to study BTEC’s and 72% of our BTEC Business and Sport students have achieved the top two grades, offering them the same access to leading universities as top A levels can provide.
These results have secured first choice places for our leavers at top universities including Imperial College, St. Andrews, Durham, Nottingham and other leading Russell Group universities. Their wide ranging choice of degrees and careers include everything from engineering, architecture, biochemistry and medicine to philosophy, law, management, sport and film.
Mr Turnbull added: “At Giggleswick we love to embrace and nurture talents of all kinds. Academic success is important of course, but what these results don’t show are the achievements of our students outside the classroom as well as in. Alongside their studies, this year’s leavers have become national athletes, award-winning musicians, West End actors, MUN ambassadors and motor racing champions too. We are very proud to be celebrating so many remarkable journeys and we wish them every success in their lives beyond Giggleswick.”
