Embracing ambition at Speech Day 2019
Monday 3 Jun 2019
'Embracing Ambition' was the theme of this year's Speech Day, celebrating the personal talents and achievements of our pupils throughout the school to mark the end of another academic year.
Our guest speaker was Mollie Hughes, the first English woman to scale Everest from both the North and the South sides. Embracing her ambitions from an early age, Mollie became the youngest woman to achieve this feat at just 26 years old. She entertained and inspired an audience of over 400 guests with tales of her mountaineering challenges and adventures, highlighting how anything can be achieved with determination, resilience and never giving up.
Mr Turnbull emphasised the importance of encouraging and recognising personal ambition across a range of interests both in and out of the classroom, and in the community too – including outdoor pursuits, art, science, business, music, drama, sport and voluntary service. He also congratulated pupils and staff on another impressive year of academic results with a particular focus on the work achieved through independent study and Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs).
Said Mr Turnbull “What really separates out the ambition in Giggleswick's learners is how each person is supported to achieve their goals. We have seen countless examples of success in so many different areas, both quietly and headline news, achieved through resilience, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone and showing determination.”
Chair of governors, Alex Thursby, highlighted the co-curriculum as a particular strength of the school. He said “The co-curriculum is a critical part of student learning. This is world class at Giggleswick. I have not seen anything like it in leading schools in Australia, Singapore and other parts of the world.”
The day started with an emotional chapel service for our sixth form leavers and their families, followed by the prize giving ceremony, a celebration lunch and the opportunity to view exhibitions of pupil work across every department in the afternoon.
