Giggleswick hosts the Johnny Walker Tag Rugby Festival

Wednesday 18 Sep 2019

Children from nine local primary schools took part in the annual Johnny Walker Tag Rugby Festival at Giggleswick School on Friday 13 September. The festival commemorates and celebrates the life of Johnny Walker, who was well-known in the Settle area and Yorkshire sporting community for his prowess in both Rugby League and Rugby Union. He honed his skills at North Ribblesdale, gaining a place in the Yorkshire under 17s, 19s and 21s as well as the North of England team.

Pupils from Austwick, Ingleton, Kirkby Malham, Long Preston, Gisburn, Settle, Giggleswick Primary School and Giggleswick Junior School took part in the festival, supported by coaches from the Rugby Football Union, White Rose Rugby and North Ribblesdale Rugby Club, who worked together to ensure a great experience for all.

The day began with rugby clinics which focused on basic ball skills and agility and was followed by an Under 9 and Under 11 team competition, refereed by Settle College Sports Leaders.

Head of Giggleswick Junior School Sport, Fergus Ogilvie, said “It was great to see boys and girls playing for their schools and children of all abilities taking part. Festivals are all about participation and fun so it was super to see lots of endeavour, some great skills in evidence and importantly mutual respect amongst team mates and opposing sides. Johnny would have loved to see these local schools, coaches and sports organisations all coming together once again for this important community event.”
