One of the standout initiatives from our Sports Department during the Virtual School were the ‘Extra Time’ talks, where professional sports stars and coaches hosted virtual sessions every Wednesday through Microsoft Teams. By hosting through Teams, talks could be recorded for pupils to re-watch or catch up on if they were unable to attend, and the sessions also allowed the pupils to ask each guest questions through the chat function, giving them a real insight into how athletes operate. Due to its success, the talks continued through the first half of this term.
The talks were thought provoking, informative and inspiring in their own unique way. All guests commented on the need to be resilient and the need to play multiple sports at a young age.
Guests this term have included:
Lizzie Simmonds joined us in week one and is a retired ex-English competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain in the Olympics, FINA World Aquatics Championships, European championships and England in the Commonwealth Games. Lizzie talked about the power of confidence and striving for excellence in every training session.
