Scarrig 2021
Ben Harris

Scarrig is Giggleswick’s annual Inter House Cross-Country Championships and is an event that wholeheartedly supports our school values of ‘Participation, Ambition and Respect’. Just like our Inter House Singing and Speaking competition, it involves every pupil from Year 7 to Year 13.

The word ‘Scarrig’ comes from the race’s original course that started beside Giggleswick Quarry and then followed the skyline above the Scar, before crossing the road, continuing on over to High Rigg and then finishing down at Top Pitch. The course has had several variations over the years and 2019 saw a radical change with a completely new course that could be trained on throughout the year.

Despite lots of rain during the week, we were blessed with a bright, dry day and the course stood up well to the 7 races.

During the week Year 11 pupil, Michael Atkins, assisted staff in putting together an excellent short film that showed the route of the course and gave pupils, parents and OGs a great understanding of what lay ahead.

To start proceedings, OGs and parents raced the 5.23km senior course, which was won by parent Lt Col. Tom Miller. It was great to see many OGs returning to run and enjoy a different course to the one they ran in their time at Giggleswick.

The Minor Boys’ and Girls’ races then took centre stage with Lucy Cowin storming home in first place overall, smashing the previous Minor Girl’s record by 30 seconds in a time of 12.41. The Minor Boys’ race was won by Jake Robinson. Craven won the overall house shield.

In the Junior races there was some strong running at the head of both the girls’ and boys’ races with Laila Rostron and Will Teal taking the top honours. Morrison were the overall winners of the Junior Boys’ house team event with Style were the winners of the Girls’.

The Senior races saw the girls competing over a 3.06km course with the boys tackling a 5.23km course. Lily Whewell came out victorious in the Senior Girls’ race, closely followed by Bella Fox-Tristram and Alison Fry. The Senior Boy’s race saw Peter Moffat claim victory, with Gabriel Vernay finishing in 2nd and Alfie Lampkin in 3rd. Following their success in the Junior race, Morrison were the overall winners of the Senior Boys’ house team event and Carr were winners of the Senior Girls’ house team event.

It was great to see all who raced participating in the true spirit of the event, giving their all for their houses, supported by so many parents.
