Tatler Schools Guide 2021: Giggleswick ‘gone from strength to strength’
Sophie Clayton

We are thrilled to be included in the Tatler Schools Guide again this year. Only the country's finest independent schools make it into the guide and it is renowned for giving the 'inside track' on schools, with a team who inspect the schools inside out with a visit and interviews with the head, parents and pupils.

Here's what Tatler said about Giggleswick:

“When asked what they would change about their school, one pupil said, ‘I would make more hours in the day.’ With so much on offer here, its not difficult to see why. Sport is an ‘integral’ part of Giggleswick life and pupils make the most of the school’s situation in the Yorkshire Dales with fell-running and mountain-biking alongside more traditional sports.

The school recently unveiled a new astro as well as a state-of-the-art fitness centre. But that’s not to say that it wouldn’t suit a less sporty type. Last year’s production of Sweeney Todd and Bugsy Malone were standout, 85% of students play an instrument or sing, and life drawing is very popular.

Under the watchful eye of Mark Turnbull (who knows every pupil by name), this non-selective school that’s ‘full of northern charm’ has gone from strength to strength academically. Last year’s GCSE results saw 43% at grades A*-A. But Giggleswick is ‘understated in its confidence’ and there’s not a hint of arrogance to be found. The pastoral care is ‘outstanding’ according to one parents and the school has introduced regular mindfulness and yoga sessions. Pupils are keen to say that Mrs Gemmell, Housemistress of Catteral, ‘radiates warmth and kindness’ and that Dr Taylor is an outstanding chemistry teacher."
